Amaradeva appointed Chancellor

Maestro W.D. Amaradewa has been appointed as the Chancellor of the North Western University of Sri Lanka for a period of five years with effect from September 23, 2002.

The appointment has been made by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, under Section 32 of the University Act No.16 of 1978.

Pundit Amaradeva is the first ever musician appointed as a Chancellor of a University in Sri Lanka.

By virtue of the powers vested in the President under the same Act, the Archbishop of Colombo Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis, Theologian, has been appointed as the Chancellor of the Colombo University for a term of five years from October 6.

Similarly,the President, acting under the same provisions, has appointed Veteran Lawyer R.K.W.Gunasekera, Mrs. Jesima Ismail, and P.J.Wijewardene as Chancellors of the Universities of Peradeniya, South East and Moratuwa respectively, for five year terms.
