Prof. Jayasekara heads Sri Lanka SMA Prof. Rohan Jayasekara, Prof. of Anatomy and Director, Human Genetics Unit Faculty of Medicine, Colombo was elected President of the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association (SLSMA), at its Annual General Meeting, held recently at the University of Colombo, Faculty of Medicine Auditorium. Prof. Jayasekara succeeded Major Gen. Dr. C. Thurairaja. Prof. Jayasekara is also the Chairman of the Education Commission of the SLSMA and was recently elected into the Education Commission of the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM). Dr. B. J. C. Perera, Consultant Paediatrician and Dr. Lalith Wijeyaratne, Consultant Rheumatologist were elected as Vice Presidents. Dr. Perera is at present the Chairman of the Liasion Commission of the AFSM and Dr. Wijeyaratne is the Official Physician to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. Dr. Hilarian Cooray, Consultant Dental Surgeon and member of the Ceylon Medical Council, a past President of the Sri Lanka Dental Association and the College of General Dental Practitioners was elected as the Secretary General. Dr. Ms. S. Willatgamuwa, Consultant in Aviation Medicine who is a founder member of the SLSMA was re-elected as the Treasurer. The other members of the Council are as follows. Maj. Gen. C. Thurairaja, Dr. D. R. K. Weerasekera, Dr. S. Kapuwatte, Dr. K. U. R. A. Banagala, Dr. D. Atukorale, Dr. Manjula Karunaratne, Dr. K. P. Sri Ranjan, Dr. A. H. Hazari, Air Cdre.(Dr.) N. Herat Gunaratne, Dr. L. P. V. E. Jayaweera. The President also outlined the objectives of the Association as follows: 1. To provide a scientific forum for the coordination and communication of all subdisciplines in the field of Sports Science. 2. To promote the prevention of sports injuries and play an active role in the therapy and rehabilitation of such injuries using the services of its membership. 3. To promote professional skills and organize postgraduate courses in Sports Medicine. 4. To educate the public and sportsmen and women in the prevention of sports injuries during sports and leisure activities, by conducting lectures, courses and training programmes in Institutes of Sports, Schools and Organisations promoting sports. |
