Conscience vote on constitutional reforms

The proposed amendment to the Constitution which is due to be placed before Parliament shortly will be significantly important to the national politics of Sri Lanka. It envisages, inter alia, the curtailment of the President's power of dissolution of parliament under Article 70 after the expiration of one year from the date of the general election. The Government seeks "conscience vote" for the safe passage of the amendment with a two-third majority in parliament. Hopefully that will be a break through for a new political culture.
