Singer - official sponsors for women's cricket What could go down to annals of women's cricket history in Sri Lanka is the reality that women's cricket will be sponsored by none other than Singer Sri Lanka. After hectic negotiations, Singer agreed to sponsor the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka until they compete for the Women's World Cup 2004 (early 2005) in South Africa. After Sri Lanka qualified as a finalist at the World Cup 2000 in New Zealand, it was a frantic search for a reputed sponsor but the grit and determination of one woman saw the dawn of reality. A much relieved Gwen Herat, President of the WCASL who broke the news, said there is hope for women's cricket to forge ahead and face any challenge. With a heavy international schedule until the run-up to the World title, the Lankan team will be kept busy. They will play in a triangular series with South Africa and India with India hosting the tournament end of November. Presently, the annual tournament 2002 is on for the selection of the POOL and played at Colombo CC grounds. The team practising at the indoor nets of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation are deeply indebted to them for the support given. WCASL is the official member of the International Women's Cricket Council with full voting rights being a Test Nation. They will complete for the World title along with England, South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand. |
