Lanka Lions lift the Gymkhana Trophy Abdul Razak reporting from Male The Lanka Lions Cricket Club of Male' became the champion of the Gymkhana Trophy when they narrowly beat the Male' Elevens (White) in the finals this tournament. Twenty four teams were in the fray for this annual trophy organised by the Gymkana here in Male' the capital City of the Maldives. This six a side soft ball tournament was held on Two Fridays 16 and 23 of August 2002. In the finals electing to bat Lanka Lions were scored 46 and in reply the Male' Eleven scored 41 for four in their allotted five overs. The opener of the Lanka Lions Mohammed Akeel became the "Man of the Series" and also the Best Batsman as he scored 61 off 16 balls in the first round match. Another 47 runs in the semi-final. Ravi Kavalu of Lanka Lions grabbed the "Man of the Match" award for his allround performance which helped Lanka Lions to lift this trophy. Krishantha of Male' Eleven (White) became the Best Bowler and Irshad Male' Ports Authority (MPA) became the Best Fielder. The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka His Excellency T. Z. A. Samsudeen graced the occasion as the chief guest and gave away the awards. The tournament was sponsored by SriLankan Airlines, Emirates and Bank of Ceylon (Male' Branch). |
