by Ananda Kannangara The fifth commemoration ceremony for former Speaker M.A. Bakeer Markar will be held at Mahaweli Centre Auditorium, Colombo today (Tuesday) at 5.30 p.m. under the patronage of Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku. United Nations Children's Fund Resident Representative in Bangkok Dr. Gamini Abeysekara will deliver the commemorative speech under the theme "Towards national unity with children and youth". The ceremony will be organised by the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity (BMCNU) A commemorative book in Sinhala "Kanthimath Kathanayaka", written by Chamika Munasinghe will also be launched at today's ceremony. In addition to this a compact disc and a souvenir, giving a brief description of the life story and the political life of the late Speaker will also be released. A series of commemorative speeches will be broadcast over the SLBC on the Sinhala, English, Tamil and Muslim services conducted by former MP Sarath Kongahage, Minister Prof G.L Peris, MP Ananda Sangaree and N. M Ameen. The organisers have also launched numerous islandwide programes with the participation of children to foster national unity, communal amity, racial and religious harmony among the communities. |
