Infotel Lanka 2002 declared national event

The Infotel Lanka 2002 exhibition will showcase Sri Lanka's capabilities in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) including multimedia and Internet. It will provide an update on the latest available technologies, products and services for foreign buyers and investors as well as local business and ICT communities. At the preceding International IT Conference many ICT professionals of international repute will share their ideas, views and experiences through keynote addresses, papers, tutorials and workshops.

The exhibition will be held from October 10 to 13 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre and the Conference from October 7 to 9.

Considering the immense importance of this event, the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to declare Infotel Lanka 2002 a national event. As a result, tax exemptions will be granted for sponsorship and participation in the Exhibition and Conference channelled through the Ministry for Economic Reform, Science and Technology. Exhibits that are to be temporarily imported for the exhibition will be exempted from customs duties.

It organised by Infotel Lanka Society Ltd., a non-profit cluster unit with representatives from the ICT Industry, IT professional bodies and relevant government agencies, Prof. V. K. Samaranayake is its Chairman. He is also the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee for the International Conference.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Industries, Science and Technology in 1992, initiated the biennial event of national importance. Following its success, it was repeated in 1994, 1997,1998 and 2000. The 10th anniversary of Infotel under theme "Envisioning an e-Lanka" reflects its focus will be held this year.

This year's Exhibition and conference will promote the deployment of ICT as a competitive tool to improve the performance and efficiency of industries and businesses all over Sri Lanka."It will provide a valuable opportunity for foreign and local counterparts to meet and form strategic alliances to harness ICT in diverse ways to benefit all the people living and working in Sri Lanka", said David Dominic, Executive Director of Infotel Lanka Society Ltd., and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee of the Infotel Exhibition.
