National School Games from September 7 to 9

The first stage of the National School Games organised and conducted by the Ministry of Education will be worked off September 7 to 9 in Colombo and in the outstations.

The under 15, under 17 and under 19 netball tournament will be held at the College of Education in Siyane, Veyangoda commencing at 8.00 a.m each day. A total of 24 teams will participate in the under 15 tournament including the defending champions St. Joseph's BMV, Nugegoda and the last year runners up Kalutara BMV.

In the under 17 tournament Maliyadeva BMV Kurunegala will be the favourites and will receive stiff opposition from the last year runners up Pannala BMV and Girls High School Kandy. Pannala BMV are the top seeds in the under 19 tournament followed by Maliyadeva BMV and St. Joseph's BMV Nugegoda. The under 13-19 cricket tournament will be held in Negombo and the venues are Kotuwa grounds, Harishchandra MV grounds, Kadolkele grounds and Major Raja grounds. Last year Lumbini MV emerged champions and Jeylani National School Balangoda were the runners up.

The boys and girls elle championships will be worked off at the Basilica grounds, Nawaloka grounds, Seeduwa Municipality grounds and at the Pannyananda MV grounds, Raddoluwa.

The under 15-19 and under 13-15 chess championships will be held at the Isipatana College all commencing at 8.00 a.m each day. Last year Royal won the under 15 title with Maliyadeva College Kurunegala as the runners up. Richmond College Galle clinched the under 19 title last year and Ranabima Royal MV Kandy were the runners up. Girls High School Kandy will be hoping to retain the girls under 15 title while St. Joseph's BMV Kegalle will defend the girls under 19 title.

The boxing events will be held at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium commencing at 8.00 a.m each day. The events will be conducted in thirteen different weight categories and competitors from 43 schools will be vying for honours.

The under 13-19 cycling events will be conducted around the Viharamaha Devi Park on September 8 commencing at 7.00 a.m. Last year Anuradhapura MMV took the boys overall title and Sirimapura MV clinched the girls overall title.

The boys under 13-19 and girls under 13-19 karate events will be worked off on September 7 to 9 at the Bandaranayake MV Gampaha and at the Ratnavali BMV Gampaha commencing at 8.00 a.m each day. Meanwhile the swimming meet will be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool on September 7 and 8 commencing at 8.00 a.m each day.

The events will be worked off boys under 17, girls under 17, boys under 19 and girls under 19. Last year Royal bagged the boys overall championship followed by St. Joseph's and S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia.

The girls overall title went to Mahamaya College Kandy with Ladies College as the first runner up and St. Bridget's Convent as the second runner up.

The schoolboys contest will be held on September 7 and 8 at the Christ King College Tudella commencing at 8.00 a.m each day. Last year Joseph Vas Wennappuwa won the overall championship ahead of Danthurai MV, Danthurai.
