Stubbs Shield boxing from September 7 to 9 The oldest and the most prestigious inter-schools Championship Boxing Tournament for "Sir R. Edward Stubbs Shield", will be held on 7th, 8th and 9th of September, at the 'Sugathadasa Indoor' Stadium, Kotahena, commencing at 4.30 p.m. each day. Over 200 competitors from over 30 schools will participate and in order to cope-up with the large number of entries, the tournament will be worked off on two boxing rings simultaneously, thereby saving time. In order to popularise boxing which was introduced by the British in 1911 and to propagate the game among leading schools, the English planter S. C. Trail got the consent of the then colonial secretary (later, the Governor) Sir R. Edward Stubbs to present a championship challenge shield in his name and requested the boxing controlling body United Services Boxing Association of Ceylon to conduct the meet. Trinity College Kandy won in 1914 and 1915. S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia won in 1916. After the formation of Ceylon Schools Boxing Association in 1935, they continued to hold the meet annually. In 1991, as a result of an appeal made by the livewire of the Schools Boxing Association and former president Donald Munasinghe, to the Ministry of Education, the ministry agreed to consider the meet as a National Schools Game and started the full sponsorship from that year. This year in the fore-front are year 2001 winners Pilimatalawa MMV and year 2000 winners Seevali MMV Ratnapura. Keen competition is expected from Colombo schools Royal and Carey, Kandy schools Vidyartha, St. Sylvesters, Kingswood and Dharmaraja, Veyangoda and Peradeniya Central Schools, St. John's Nugegoda and Vidyaratne, Horana. Preliminary weigh-in and medical examination will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday 7th September at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. |
