Chilaw Marians out to give another giant killing display

by Chris Dhambarage

Chilaw Marians Sports Club will be hoping to produce another giant killing performance when they take on Bloomfield in the BCCSL under 23 Division One cricket tournament final at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium starting today.

Chilaw Marians SC have already created a couple of surprises by overcoming some of the more fancied teams on their way into the final. Last week too they produced a superb team effort to beat Tamil Union in the semifinals. Earlier they had the better of Nugegoda Sports Club in the quarterfinals.

However Bloomfield will have a psychological advantage after having the better of the exchanges when the two teams met earlier in a preliminary round fixture which eventually ended in a no decision. Bloomfield of course suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the BCCSL under 19 side but have recovered well and have turned out to be a major force. In fact Bloomfield look the more experienced side on paper but will no doubt be under tremendous pressure from the youthful Chilaw Marians SC outfit. Bloomfield will be hoping that their senior players like Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Kaushal Weerasinghe, Ian Daniel and skipper Duminda Perera would strike form in this important encounter. Paceman Tharanga Lakshitha too is in good form having played a dominant role in their success over Air Force SC in the semifinals last week.

Chilaw Marians SC too are quite confident and have a very good chance of winning the title. They have made steady progress throughout the tournament and have now formed a superb combination which is capable of performing under different conditions. They certainly proved their capabilities by bundling out the Tamil Union team for under two hundred runs last week with Praneeth Jayasundera leading the way.

In fact Jayasundera has been one of their most outstanding players in this tournament along with skipper Janaka Gunaratne who has the honour of scoring the only double century in this competition. In addition Sri Lanka cap Hasantha Fernando too has proved his all round capabilities and is capable of playing a leading role. Their team will be further strengthened with the return of Ishan Muthalib who was down with chicken pox.

The teams:

Bloomfield (from): Duminda Perera (captain), Thilina Kandambi, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Kaushal Weeraratne, Tharanga Lakshitha, S. Mendis, Sumalka Perera, Ian Daniel, Saranga Gamage, Udara Weerasinghe, Buddhika Ranaweera, Chanaka Udugama, Asela Beligaswatte, Dinesh Nanayakkara, Oshadie Weerasinghe (coach).
