Over 10,000 flock to police stations to get N.I.Cs

Over 10,000 persons have flocked to 32 Police Stations in the Gampaha District to finalise and handover applications to obtain new National Identity Cards at the Mobile Offices conducted at the Police Stations during two days of last weekend (Aug 31 and Sep. 1), according to the statistics gathered by the Police.

A large number who have applied are said to be people in village areas in the District who had confessed that they had not obtained or delayed getting their NICs due to their ignorance on how to set about it or due to difficulty in going behind the relevant officials to get the documents certified. With the relevant officials like the Grama Sevakas, officials of the Registration of Persons Department, the Divisional Secretariats and police officials themselves being present at every police station the filling up forms and clearing all doubts have been attended to on the spot.

The Mobile Service launched on the initiative of the Minister of Interior John Amaratunga at the 32 Police Stations in the Gampaha District will continue during this weekend (on September 7th and 8th) as well and persons who have not applied for new NICs could do so by visiting the nearest police station in the area. It is part of the Minister's strategy of assisting the people as well as developing close police-public relations making police more service oriented to meet the needs of the people.

Arrangements have been made my the Department of Registration of Persons to issue National Identity Cards to all those who applied during the two week-ends (i.e on Aug 31, Sept. 1st, 7th and 8th) at the relevant Police Stations at 10 a.m. on September 15th.

The Minister of Interior hopes to implement this Mobile Service programme in other Districts as well as he feels that there are still a large number who require to obtain an identity cards which is an essential requirement for every citizen facilitating the holder in various transactions and personal needs.
