President to meet PA MPs today

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has summoned a special group meeting of the People's Alliance (PA) for 10.00 am today at the President's House to discuss the current developments on the political front, PA sources told the Daily News.

The President will seek the opinion of PA members on the 19th Amendment, the deproscription of the LTTE and peace talks, PA MP A.H.M Fowzie said.

Earlier the President in her meeting with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had asked for three days to present her views on the 19th Amendment.

This request was accepted by the Premier who put on hold the gazetting of the proposal with the possibility of accommodating the President's proposals in the Amendment.

She is also scheduled to meet the Prime Minister this evening (6) where the topic will be discussed, another PA MP told the Daily News.

Whatever the PA's decision on the 19th Amendment, the Government has decided to gazette the 19th Amendment on Monday (9) and present the Amendment in Parliament on 16th.
