by Gampaha South Group Corr.

The Freedom of Information Act will be presented to parliament shortly with the aim of further liberalising the media, Mass Communication Minister Imtiaz Bakeer Makar told a group of Provincial journalists.

He said not stopping with the repealing of the Criminal Defamation Law, the United National Front Government would proceed further with measures to make the media more independent and the provision of other facilities and privileges. The Minister was addressing provincial journalists in the Gampaha District after issuing them with Information Department accredition Cards.

The Minister said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was a far thinking individual who is well aware of the importance of a free media and he has come forward to provide all assistance towards the realisation of this object."

It is equally important that the media provide the public with important factual and impartial news.
