by Florence Wickramage Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake will address the Earth Summit currently on in Johannesburg on September 3rd. The Sri Lankan delegation to the Summit is being led by Minister Senanayake. The Minister will also present the country paper on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government. The Summit is being attended by world leaders, Heads of State and Government, representatives of non-governmental environment organisations and a highest ever record number of media personnel attending a World Summit. The Summit held against a backdrop of uncertainty as to the position of rich countries with regard to the natural heritages of developing countries, and a questionable attitude as to how far they would accept responsibility for their own contributions to the degradation of the environment is to arrive at a negotiated consensus to find solutions to the pressing needs of an endangered Earth. The Johannesburg Summit is being held 10 years after the Rio de Janeiro Summit which drew up the Agenda 21 highlighting a course of action governments should adopt to protect and conserve the environment, whilst addressing at the same time elimination of poverty and other social issues which goes hand in hand with development. |
