President opposes lifting of LTTE ban before talks

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has opposed the lifting of the ban on the LTTE before the commencement of peace talks, and the granting of an interim administration before consensus is reached on core issues.

She told a group of Buddhist leaders that de-banning the LTTE should be based on the outcome of talks while an Interim Administration should be limited to the duration of the time for the implementation of the decisions on the issues on which consensus had been reached, a media release signed by Director General of the Presidential Media Unit Janadasa Peiris said.

The President also told the group that no decision had been taken at Cabinet to lift the proscription on the LTTE and that she was not aware if such a decision had been taken in her absence and added that had such a proposal been made in her presence she would have opposed it.

The leader of the group, the Ven. Daranagama Kusaladhamma thera said they were there to lodge their protest to a statement by the government that the proscription on the LTTE would be lifted and the attempt made to concede an interim administration. The group which claimed it was representing the views of the Maha Sangha urged the President to intervene in this regard.
