News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | committee inquiring in to election-related violence : Date for receiving complaints extended by Ranil Wijayapala The committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to inquire in to election-related violence at the Parliamentary and Local Government elections has extended the date of receiving complaints till October 1. Justice Ranjit Dheeraratne, former Supreme Court Judge and the Chairman of the Committee yesterday said that the committee has so far received 47 complaints and three suggestions. The highest number of complaints have been received from the Kandy district (18) and four each from the Kurunegala and Gampaha districts. The SLFP Lawyers Association, National Workers' Congress and an individual has sent the three proposals to the committee. People can send in their complaints through affidavits and their proposals to minimise elections related violence till October 1. Dr. Arjuna Parakrama, a member of the committee said the committee expect to issue an interim report by the end of this year and another comprehensive report including proposals to minimise election related violence. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed this committee to inquire into election-related violence committed before, during and after the Parliamentary Elections of December 5, 2001 and Local Government Elections of March and May 2002. The committee also comprises of Kingsley Rodrigo, Executive Director of the PAFFREL, Dr. Arjuna Parakrama of the Center for Monitoring Elections Violence, Dr. Joel Fernando of the Organisation of Professional Association (OPA) and Javid Yusuf representing the Opposition Parties in the Parliament. |
