Yuga Dekma industrial exhibition on quarterly basis mooted

By Channa Kasturisinghe

The Ministry of Industries is considering to hold the Yuga Dekma Industrial Exhibition on a quarterly basis in a bid to extend the Government's industrialisation program to every district in the country.

Several Ministers, Members of Parliament and Industrialists who witnessed the success of the recently concluded Yuga Dekma Industrial Exhibition in Trincomalee have made this proposal, Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the Trincomalee exhibition was immensely successful and several industry opportunities were opened to the people especially in the North East where there is a lot of potential for development. "The involvement of the Infosys Chairman, Narayana Murthi who is considered the Bill Gates of Asia has been a novel experience to the people of the area. The participation of several Government and private sector institutions in this exhibition has been a great motivating factor as far as the small and medium scale industrialists in the area are concerned. Our aim is to continue with this new concept on a more regular basis," the Minister said.

He said the second Yuga Dekma will be held in Matara in August 2003.

"It would be our first anniversary and we are planning to organise it on a grander scale. Meanwhile, we will look into the possibility of holding another exhibition on a small scale in some other district," the Minister said.

Minister Bogollagama said the Bill for the proposed five economic jurisdictions will be presented to Parliament next month. "We have undergone two different eras in this country with regard to economic development. Prior to 1978 we had a closed economy and then the United National Party introduced the Open Economy to the country. Having gone through both these eras the time has come to embark on a more effective economic program for the development of this country. The United National Front Government's policy on industrialisation is focused on achieving this goal. The proposed five economic jurisdictions will extend industrialisation to every district in the country according to the resources available in these areas. It would generate employment opportunities at regional level and symmetrical development in every part of the country," Minister Bogollagama said.

He said the Government is giving every encouragement to small and medium scale industrialists in the country and they will be given priority in the five economic zones.

"We have already taken measures to help the local industries to operate successfully. For example, the Government recently imposed a total ban on the export of copper to assist the foundry industries in the country. The economic zones at regional level would be vested with powers to safeguard the industries in these areas," the Minister said.

He said he would visit India shortly to study the development of the IT sector in the rural areas and to adopt similar measures in Sri Lanka.
