Security after retirement: risks and challenges ahead

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the request of the Minister of Employment and Labour, Mahinda Samarasinghe, is sponsoring a workshop on the need for restructuring the retirement support systems in Sri Lanka. The one-day workshop today is being organised by the Sri Lanka Association of Investment Professional (SLAIP). Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe will be the chief guest.

The workshop has been organised to create awareness and initiate discussion on the need for pension reform to ensure security after retirement.

Dr. W. Indralal De Silva, Professor and Head, Department of Demographics, University of Colombo, Dr. Rannan-eliya, Associate Fellow, IPS Indrajith Aponsu, Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics, University of Colombo, Ravi Abeysuriya, and Ms. Christine Dias Bandaranaike of SLAIP would make presentations on some of the important issues facing the country and the need for urgent reform in this area. Key invitees among the participants are the labour unions who would be important stakeholder of any reform process.

According to the ILO's World Labour Report 2000, income security of people is the bedrock of a decent society. Societies which do not pay enough attention to income security, especially the security of their weaker members, eventually suffer a destructive backlash.
