Model police stations islandwide by Sarath Malalasekera The first model police station was opened in Bambalapitiya recently. "People elect their representatives to power, not to resort to bribery and corruption but to discharge their duties with responsibility. The United National Front which came to power pledging to eradicate irregularities and corruption has a duty by the people to stop such practices," Interior Minister John Amaratunga said at the opening ceremony. "When I fulfil this obligation, the former rulers are bringing in no confidence motions against me," he said. "There are certain politicians who oppose the ongoing peace process. They are politicos who have lost the people's confidence. The people have the right to know as to why the government coffers are depleted. When the no confidence motion against me is debated in Parliament for three days, people will have the opportunity to know the reasons," the Interior Minister said. Referring to the programme of establishing model police stations, Minister Amaratunga observed that this is a concept of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe intended to nurture goodwill and understanding between the people and the police and that eventually the officer in charge of a police station will become a good manager conducting a police team who will recognise the difficulties of the people and feel for them. Sisilia Mutukumarana on behalf entrepreneur Anthony Page presented two computers and a photocopier to the Interior Minister to be used by the Bambalapitiya model police station. Mannapperuma Traders undertook to repair all broken down jeeps belonging to the police station.
