Four villages to be developed - PS Chairman

by Kuliyapitiya group correspondent

Kuliyapitiya PS Chairman Sarath Dayawansa Narasinghe (UNP) said at the monthly meeting of the Sabha that Rs. 3 lakhs had been allocated for the development of four under-developed villages in the area. Those funds would be utilised for providing toilet and drinking water facilities for the villagers in Henemulla Colony, Medawa Colony, Wewagama Watta Colony and Kotaden iyawa Colony. Rs. 177,770 would be spent on construction of 84 lavatories and the rest on construction of four tube wells in the four villages.

The Chairman pointed out that the bridge over Dandagamu Oya along Hammalawa - Galahitiyawa Road is long delayed. The upper section is yet to be constructed. The contractor had appealed for an extension of the date.

Wickremasinghe Banneheka (UNP) said, this bridge should have been completed in 2001 but only the side walls were done so far. The people blame the Sabha for this delay. It is due to the negligence of the contractor.

Sirisena Herath (PA) said, the contractor should show reasonable cause when appealing for an extension of the date. What are the causes?

The Chairman said, no cause was given. One extension was given up to May 31st prior to this. But the work was not even touched. N. M. Naseer (UNP) said, it shows his negligence. Let us say that the work could not be completed by May 31st due to the rains. There was no rain after May. He could have completed the job had he commenced work after the rains.

E. L. M. Sadique (UNP) said the Sabha should not be surrendered to the contractors. If one contractor doesn't do the job according to schedule it is better to cancel his agreement and give it to another contractor who could complete the work according to the dead line. The Vice Chairman Mahinda Pushpakumara (UNP) said, let us give him another extension, but let him know that it will be the final extension.
