By Rashomi Silva Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed a committee headed by Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jayawickrama Perera to find long and short term solutions to the drought situation in the Hambantota district. Speaking at a news conference, the Minister said both the government and opposition MPs are in the Committee and the government and the Opposition will be working together in their endeavour to overcome the difficulties faced by the people of the district. The minister said the Red Cross will be launching a project in mid- August to provide dry rations for nine months to the people in areas severely affected by the drought. The MPs were of the view that although enough assistance was provided during the previous year's drought due to lack of coordination among the donors and the administrative bodies, it was not properly distributed among the villages and the programmes failed to give the desired result. The MPs agreed to request the public and the organisations who are willing to cooperate in the relief programmes to send their donations and goods through the Divisional secretary of the district. |
