Nalanda honours 50 sportsmen

"An invariable objective of education is the creation of a generation of children who are blessed with spiritual well-being and are adept in creativity and imagination. We have learnt the technique of facing the future through our school.

We, Nalandians have a high motto as our guiding principle. This reads "Apadana Sobhini Panna" Wisdom illuminates character. As sportsmen trained at Nalanda, we learned the art of formulating our Life in a disciplined and socially profitable manner", said Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Minister of Irrigation and Water Management participating as the Chief Guest at the Colours Awarding Ceremony held at Nalanda College, Colombo.

More than 50 sportsmen were awarded colours in 22 disciplines. The ceremony was organised by the Old Nalandians Sports Club.

"In Education, mere book learning is not sufficient. The students should participate in Sports and Arts and all the activities of the School, both academic and non academic. It is through the transfer of training that we become a Complete Man.

As disciplined students, you must have total commitment to the service of your mother land", said Minister Perera.

He said if there is an erosion of discipline in today's society one reason for this is the lack of respect for parents and teachers. Today, too we address our teachers by the expression "Sir" though, they may have not taught us even a day. This does not do any harm to us.

Hemantha Prematillake Principal, Nalanda Vidyalaya, Sunil Wickrematunga, Secretary ONSC, Daya Abeysekera an old boy of Nalanda Vidyalaya also addressed the gathering.
