New marketing scheme to benefit consumers

Upcountry farmers and consumers islandwide are the beneficiaries of a new marketing scheme jointly introduced by the Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation and the Ministry of Finance recently.

Six private sector companies involved in food marketing and the CWE are now engaged in this scheme in the hill country, Colombo and its suburbs, Finance Minister K.N.Choksy told the Daily News yesterday.

Vegetable growers have been able to fetch better prices for their produce while consumers can buy them at reasonable prices under the scheme which is being supervised by the Advisor to the Policy Development and Implantation Ministry R. Paskaralingam.

The operating companies have obtained 30 abandoned warehouses in the hill county on lease to set up collecting centres where they buy the produce directly from the farmers and transport them to their retail sales centres in the City, the Minister said.
