The government has explained that security in the Eastern Province has been strengthened in the past month and not weakened, in response to a letter sent to the Minister of Defence by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Minister Tilak Marapana is learnt to have said that military and Special Task Force camps in the East had not been withdrawn but had been relocated within 100 to 200 meters of their earlier locations and extra units deployed to ensure the confidence of the civilian population. The President had earlier written to the Minister saying that security of the East had been compromised by the withdrawal of Security Forces camps and asked for an explanation. Reports said that this letter was part of a conspiracy by the People's Alliance to stage a constitutional coup to oust the government.
