Milinda to brief PM on East

by Ranil Wijayapala

Economic Reform and Science and Technology Minister Milinda Moragoda will hand over a special report to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on the situation in the East, making recommendations to prevent repetition of such incidents.

A spokesman for the Minister told the Daily News yesterday that the Minister was due to hand over this report to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last night or this morning after his return from Valachchenai last night.

The Minister said the situation in the East was under control by yesterday and no further incidents were reported in those areas, the spokesman added.

Minister Moragoda during his visit to Valachchenai and other areas in the East had met civilians, civil society organisations, religious dignitaries and Armed Forces and Police personnel separately to asses the situation there, the spokesman added.

The three Armed Forces Commanders, Acting IGP T.E. Anandarajah, Secretaries to the Ministries of Interior and Rehabilitation accompanied the Minister during this fact finding visit, the spokesman added.

The Government took immediate steps to bolster security in the two districts on Friday night by imposing a curfew and deploying Armed Forces.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had chaired three security meetings to asses the situation and to take additional security measures to maintain law and order in the East.

Port Development and Shipping Minister Rauff Hakeem also visited Valachchenai on Saturday to observe the situation and to look into welfare of the affected people.
