Price Index for June The Colombo Consumers' Price Index (CCPI) for the month of June 2002 was 3292.1. This shows an increase of 88.4 index points or 2.8 percent from the May, 2002 index number of 3203.7. This is an increase of Rs. 178.82 in the Expenditure Value of "Market basket" when compared to May 2002. States a Department of Consumers and Statistics Press release. The increase in the CCPI for June, 2002 is mainly due to increase in prices of dried chilies, cummin seed, limes, red onions fresh butter, beef, some verities of fresh fish and dried fish, potatoes, eggs, most verities of vegetables, specially up country vegetables and fuel. These price increases in food items can be mainly attributed to short supply of consumer goods to the main markets in Colombo city due to prevailing weather conditions and the increase in the prices of fuel. However prices of rice, sugar, sour plantains, some verities of fresh fish and coconuts have decreased during this month. Annual inflation rate on the basis of 12 months moving average decreased to 11.4 percent in June, 2002 from 11.7 percent in May 2002. |
