LTTE assures support to ease tension by Ranga Jayasuriya Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) political wing leader Thamilchelvam has assured Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Chief Gen. Trond Furuhovde of LTTE assistance to ease the tension in certain parts of the East. Furuhovde met Thamilchelvam in Kilinochchi over the weekend. "When the discussions focused the tense situation, Thamilchelvam promised to assist the Government to keep things calm," SLMM spokesman Tuitor Torkelsson told the Daily News. He said the LTTE demand for sea movement was not sorted out, but added that the Tigers stressed the need to avoid a recurrence of mishaps which took place in February and April. "The LTTE needs a safe system of sea movement," he said. Gen. Furuhovde also met the Sea Tiger leader Soosai. The LTTE has appointed former Jaffna Municipal Commissioner C.V.K.Sivatnanam as its representative to the Special Commission on the Kayts incident appointed by the Prime Minister. The SLMM Chief has briefed Director General of the Peace Secretariat Bernard Gunatillake on the discussions. |
