President expresses concern

The Presidential Secretariat in a special statement issued on Saturday expressed the grave concern of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, regarding the recent violence in the Eastern Province.

The president "who is deeply disturbed by the events of the last few days appeals to all citizens to exercise restraint and to remain calm in the face of the existing situation," the statement said.

Tolerance and respect for each other are vital for establishing lasting peace. It is vital that citizens belonging to all communities remain calm during times of tension such as these, she cautioned.

The President emphasised that the prevailing situation underscores the necessity for working towards a solution where lasting peace can be achieved with honour, dignity and respect, while preserving the rights of all citizens irrespective of their race, religion and community.
