Pharmacy education should be upgraded - Minister Dayaratna

by Rashomi Silva

The Pharmacy education of the country should be upgraded to make it conform to international standards. Minister of Health, Nutrition and Welfare P. Dayaratne said in his message to the Annual Session of the Pharmaceutical Society of Sri Lanka. The Minister said the steps taken to establish a Pharmacy council will help to achieve this goal. The Minister also appreciated the adoption of a code of ethics by the pharmacists as a wise step taken to earn high level of acceptance and recognition among the public and furthermore it will help the pharmacists to discharge their duties more efficiently as Pharmacists.

Speaking on this occasion Prof. Tuley De Silva, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Sri Lanka said making more opportunities available for the Pharmacists to continue their higher studies and to get professional training is a crying need today. Making quality drugs available in the country is not enough to provide quality service. Storage , freight and handling facilities should also be improved. In unison the training of the pharmacists should be improved.

Speaking on the clinical aspect of pharmacy Dr. Russell Greene, Head of the Pharmacy Practice Group at King's College London said the Pharmacist should become involved in the process of decision making, and not be made to provide the drug recommended by the practioneers. The Pharmacist should be given the right to make a suitable substitute, especially if the drug is prescribed in the branded name. They should be made a part of central health care and should not be marginalised.
