Japan provides bicycles to deserving schoolchildren

Two ceremonies for the handing over of bicycles to deserving children in low income families, took place on June 25 and 28 at the Salvation Army Headquarters in Rambukkana and Mahanama Maha Vidyalaya, Moneragala. The project was organised by the Colombo Branch of the Society for Educational Support for Sri Lankan Children - Osaka, Japan.

The Cycle Aid Project to donate used bicycles to students overseas was launched in 1997 by the local government of the Osaka Prefecture of Japan. The objective of the project is to help students who have difficulty in getting to school and to encourage them and take an interest in their studies while further promoting friendly relations between the two countries.

The Government of Japan has assisted in the transportation of 188 bicycles under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects. The bicycles were provided by the Society for Educational Support for Sri Lankan Children - Osaka, Japan. These bicycles will be distributed among the most deserving children in Ampara, Badulla, Hambantota, Kegalle, Moneragala and Ratnapura regardless of religion or ethnicity.

This year the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Japan and Sri Lanka which is evidently marked with pleasant memories of cordial and co-operative relations is being celebrated. With the celebration of this important milestone in the history of Japan and Sri Lanka, there is confidence that the bond between Japan and Sri Lanka will go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

The people and the Government of Japan hope that the bicycle aid project will help the younger generation in Sri Lanka to achieve greater success in their studies and through this assistance, cordial relations, which happily exist between our two countries, will be further strengthen and consolidated.
