by Rashomi Silva The All Ceylon Guru Shakthi Foundation with the coordination of The Ministries of Public Administration, Management and Reform, Ministry of School Education and the Ministry of Defence has organised a peace journey from Galle to Jaffna from July 2 to 6. Exercise books, school bags, shoes and other school items will be distributed among the needy schoolchildren in Jaffna as a token of goodwill. Speaking at a press briefing held at the Public administration, Management and Reform ministry yesterday, the Minister said, "This Peace journey is organised without any political involvement. Even the donations will be done through the divisional secretaries of the respective areas. "I have invited several political party representatives of Galle district to join us on our peace journey. "The sole aim of the journey is to clear the misunderstandings and build a friendship bridge between the North and South. "We hope to get some Jaffna schoolchildren to south and to give them an understanding of the Sinhala culture and society. We want to plant the seed of peace in our children's mind. We hope our journey will strengthen the already existing foundation for peace. The Jaffna schoolchildren are going through a lot of hardships. More than 60 per cent of teacher vacancies are not filled in the Jaffna district. The students are studying under the trees due to lack of school buildings. Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Commissioner General for North and East coordination Bradman Weerakoon said the Prime Minister wants to uplift the quality of life in the North and East. |
