Athletic Nationals - final trial for Asian championships

The 80th National Championships conducted by the Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka on July 17, 18, 19 and 20 at the Sugathadasa Stadium will be the dress rehearsal and the final trial for the 14th Asian Athletic Championships to be held from 9 to 12 August at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Entries will close on June 26 with the Chairman of Competition, AAA of Sri Lanka.

Capt. Shemal Fernando, vice president AAA and Chairman Competition said that all national athletes presently training in Singapore and Malaysia together with the athletes who secured first three places at the 3-day first national trial held at Torrington grounds last weekend, will be seen in action.

Men will participate in 18 events - decathlon, shot putt, javelin throw, discus throw, pole vault, triple jump, long jump, high jump, 3,000 metres steeple chase, 400 metres hurdles, 110 metres hurdles, 10,000 metres, 5,000 metres, 1,500 metres, 800 metres, 400 metres, 200 metres and 100 metres. Meanwhile women will participate in 16 events - heptathlon, shot putt, javelin, discus, triple jump, long jumbo, high jump, 400 metres hurdles, 100 metres hurdles, 10,000 metres, 5,000 metres 1,500 metres, 800 metres, 400 metres, 200 metres and 100 metres.

Capt. Fernando added that 20 km walk for both men and women is also on the card at the National Championships. But that event will take place during the National Festival to be held on July 7 at the Sri Jayawardenapura Sports Complex.

The selection of the Sri Lanka contingent for the Asian Athletic Championships will be made on July 21 immediately after the Nationals. Then the names of the athletes will be submitted to the Sports Minister for approval.

Johnston Fernando, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports who has helped the AAA of Sri Lanka a great deal has been invited to be the chief guest on the final day of the National Championships - July 20.
