International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking

A message from Dr. U. Sarat Chandran Secretary General Colombo Plan Secretariat

"Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS" is the theme for this year's international Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls today June 26. The Colombo Plan, the pioneer in drug abuse prevention in the Asia-Pacific region, through its Drug Advisory Program (DAP) implements effective initiatives against drug abuse and thus continues its relentless drive against the scourge of drugs in all its member countries. Cognizant of the continued escalation of drug abuse prevalence in the Asia-Pacific region, and its multifarious drastic consequences to individuals, families, societies and countries, the DAP advocates a proactive and balanced approach to the prevention and control of the drug menace in the region.

Drug abuse and illicit trafficking have adversely affected the youth of many countries. These young people - the most precious resource of every country - will not only be potential future leaders of their respective countries but will also comprise a major part of each country's workforce. If these young people are affected by the scourge of drugs and HIV/AIDS, their countries would not only lose a vital resource, but also face numerous problems in the future, which will not only hinder their economic and social progress and development but also affect the national security of those countries.

The DAP's timely intervention in organizing drug abuse prevention activities has helped Colombo Plan member countries in their fight against drug abuse. Drug abuse prevention strategies focusing on social competence/enhancement of life skills could play a vital role in targeting victims to refrain from drug use and also assist them in their process of recovery, particularly in their reintegration into the main stream of society.
