by Ranil Wijayapala Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to establish a Special Independent Commission to probe the alleged attack on LTTE cadres at Vellani, Kayts island last Friday, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) spokesman Teitur Torkelson told the Daily News yesterday. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has informed the SLMM of this decision, Torkelson added. Head of the SLMM General (rtd) Trond Furuhovde recommended a special commission to inquire into the Kayts incident following his preliminary investigations made on a complaint by the LTTE that their cadres were attacked by a group of Forces personnel last week. The three-member committee will be entrusted to complete their task within 14 days of the first meeting and to compile a comprehensive report on their findings and recommendations regarding the incident. The committee will have one representative each from the Government, LTTE and SLMM. The LTTE member for the commission will be appointed from a civil society association. According to informed sources, a retired Supreme Court Judge will be appointed as the member from the Government. In addition to the investigations by this Special Commission of Inquiry, separate investigations are also being conducted by a team of joint military forces, the spokesman added. These investigations will ascertain whether Army and Navy personnel have disobeyed their superiors and take disciplinary action against the involved parties. |
