Sri Lanka Exporter March-May 2002 The Sri Lanka Exporter March-May 2002 issue has featured a host of valuable articles pertaining to exports of garments, desiccated coconut and spices and various other trade issues in the current market. In an interesting article, Prospects for seaweed processing in Sri Lanka is highlighted with useful information on the industry. "In the present scenario, the prospects for Sri Lanka's seaweed appears to be good. Developing countries in the Asian region contribute 20% of the global requirement of seaweed," the article said. A spice exporter, Mario de Alwis in an article about spice exports says that Sri Lanka has not accrued the full potential in spice exports which is classified as a minor export crop. He said since Sri Lanka is situated ideally adjacent to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Nepal, it could access material from these countries for value addition in the local export industry. However, he says major constraints stem from the fact that individuals or companies involved in the business do not see consistency in raw material supplies or general policy. "Due to this reason, there is no large scale investment in this sector," he says. Prof. Hasan Khan has written about Economy of fresh water prawn with statistics from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
