Lanka, first to supply ADSL in South Asia

ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, the newest technology introduced by Sri Lanka Telecom for its customers, was introduced for the first time in the Slave Island region. Customers who make use of e-commerce and are interested in this technology were provided with this service. Sri Lanka has gained the distinction as the first country in South Asia to provide its customers this service, which is very popular in several countries in the West as well as in Asian countries such as Korea and Japan, a Telecom press release said.

Internet browsers using a computer provided with ADSL are able to obtain instantly the required data without any impediments or congestion due to the ADSL bandwidth being wider many times over than the bandwidth requesting data.

As a result, users need not waste time. The other benefit provided by the ADSL is the ability to use a telephone which is being used to browse the internet, also to receive or send a telephone message simultaneously.

In this way, two services are provided through one line. Also due to an excellent audio visual facility ADSL users are able to enjoy songs, pictures and data of a high order. Similarly, ADSL enables a more efficient use of e-commerce and e-application. Even if the data is vast or accompanied by attachments, ADSL makes it possible to access such data without impediments and delay and thereby adds much benefit to the business community which uses the internet.

CEO, SLT, Shuhei Anan in introducing ADSL said, "the biggest problems faced by many customers engaged in exchanging information through Internet were the impediments and delay. We identified them and introduced the quick ADSL technology to solve the problems. We are proud to have brought to the people of this country the ADSL technology, which is very popular in the Asia Pacific Region, first in South Asia.". It is now for the people to enjoy this service, Mr. Anan said.

ADSL introduced as a developed service of sltNET to the customers of Slave Island will be extended to Colombo Central, Kollupitiya, Maradana, Havelock Town, Nugegoda and Ratmalana during the year, S. Kimura, Head of Marketing Group said.

SLT provides ADSL in two packages for its customers. One is downloading data at 2Mbit/s and the other uploading at 512Kbit/s. The other package is obtaining data at 512Kbit/s and applying for data at a speed of 128 Kbit/s, Priyantha Undugodage, Head of Internet Protocol Section said.
