Lanka, Mexico to exchange expertise, strengthen trade ties

Sri Lanka and Mexico will exchange expertise in technology in the agricultural and industrial sectors to strengthen trade ties between the two countries.

The Ambassador of Mexico to Sri Lanka, Julio Faesler Carlisle who is based in New Delhi met Ministers representing these sectors to discuss ways of improving bilateral relationship between the countries.

The Ambassador at his meeting with Agriculture and Livestock Minister S. B. Dissanayake discussed the possibility of both countries exchanging experts and professionals representing the private sectors of the two countries with regard to use of modern technology especially in food processing.

Minister Dissanayake and the Ambassador discussed Sri Lanka's poverty alleviation programs including micro-credits, micro-savings, micro-industry and self-employment schemes. The Ambassador said that Mexico has a very advanced poverty alleviation program and could assist Sri Lanka with its own experience.

The Ambassador also met Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minster Ravi Karunanayake. At the meeting Ambassador Faesler stressed the need for a successful conclusion of the next Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organisation with regard to the trade negotiations to be held under Mexican leadership. He said that the principle decision-making process should be completed well before the 2003 meetings.

The Ambassador called upon Minister Karunanayake to join Mexico's efforts in actively promoting the interest of developing countries towards the preparation of the meeting.

They also held a discussion in promoting reciprocal business missions to approach Mexico's and Sri Lanka's private sectors in order to develop and strengthen economic cooperation. Electrical products, food processing, agriculture, agro-equipment, automotive parts and pharmaceuticals as well as the textile sector were identified as potential sectors.

The Ambassador also held talks with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) to increase the sale of spice and other Sri Lankan products. They agreed to form a separate section of the CCC to keep a constant connection with the Indo-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and Culture, which is being formed in New Delhi.
