Gemonics launches commercial operations

Gemonics (Pvt) Ltd., a company set up three years ago under licence from Cambridge Gemonics (Pvt) Ltd., to further develop and commercialise the use of Robotic Gem Cutting and Polishing machines in an automated lapidary environment, has relocated to a new premises, where commercial operations are being initiated for service cutting orders already secured from two large German companies, a company release said.

The machine design is unique in that it is computer controlled where the Computer Aided Design (CAD) data with the different designs is fed into the computer to enable the machine to perform its functions for the cutting and polishing of gemstones to required sizes and shapes. In addition to the robotic faceting and polishing machines, Gemonics has fabricated a Pre-Faceting and Girdle Grinding Machine and Re-Dopping Jig, which are three essential items for the automated faceting and polishing process. The company is also planning on designing and fabricating an automated Girdle Polishing Machine to supplement the production line.

Apart from service cutting of rough stones, Gemonics has identified a company well established in the field of machine automation to tie up with them for the mass manufacture of the Robotic Machine, to be able to cater to the needs of the local and global industry in an efficient and cost effective manner. Initially, the company intends to manufacture a single arm machine with the facility of interchanging the faceting and polishing wheels. This would facilitate the use of one machine to perform both faceting and polishing functions. This model would be an affordable investment for the small and medium sized lapidary. Soon after the launching of this model, the company proposes to manufacture machines with two robotic arms having the capability of mounting multiple spindle cassettes on each arm. This machine will cater to the needs of the large scale lapidary.

"We are proud to have been part of a Sri Lankan invention, which is now developed and ready for full-scale commercial production. We are able to achieve, precision, quality and quantity at very competitive market rates, which otherwise would take a lot of manual labour, yet compromising of precision. Our long term plans are to stabilise the service cutting operation as a benchmark for the industry, while further developing the technologies towards commercial machine building and marketing on a global scale," said Dr. Vickum Senanayake, CEO of Gemonics at the re-launching of company operations at the new premises and commencement of commercial operations.
