India A in a thrilling two wicket win

Chris Dhambarage reporting from Dambulla

India 'A' pulled off a thrilling two wicket win over Sri Lanka 'A' in the third unofficial one day match played at the Rangiri Dambulla international stadium yesterday.

After restricting the home side for 235 for 8 India 'A' reached their target with just ten balls to spare. India 'A' got off to a good start with opener Gambhir and Gavaskar both scoring half centuries. The Lankans came back into the game during the latter stages with Pramodaya Wickremasinghe claiming three wickets in the one over. But all rounder J. P. Yadev also completed a fighting half century and later Singh added the finishing touches with an unbeaten knock of 20.

Earlier Sri Lanka 'A' recovered from an early setback to reach 235 for 9 from their allotted 50 overs mainly due to two half centuries from test cap Tillekeratne Dilshan and Chamara Silva. Both batted with great authority and figured in a fourth wicket stand of 96 runs after they had collapsed to 86 for 3 at one stage.

Dilshan after a disappointing test series struck form at last and hammered 66 runs from 92 balls with the help of three boundaries. Chamara Silva of course carried on with his excellent form and made 56 from 59 balls inclusive of five boundaries. The pair set the stage for the final assault as they reached 182 for 4 with the last 15 overs remaining in the game.

However the Sri Lanka 'A' middle order failed to maintain the same momentum during the latter stages of the innings and lost their last five wickets for the addition of just 52 runs. But Anushka Polonowita rose to the occasion and made a useful 26 from 20 deliveries as the Lankans finished at 235 for 9.

Fast bowler Balaji and spinner S. Singh captured three wickets each and received good support from Sharma, Yadev and Mishra.
