Ex-soldiers gift wheelchairs to disabled LTTE cadres

Rashomi Silva reporting from Kilinochchi

The Association of Disabled Ex-Servicemen yesterday donated wheelchairs and clutches to disabled LTTE cadres as a token of friendship in the presence of LTTE Political wing leader S.P. Thamil Chelvam.

After welcoming the representatives of the Ex-servicemen and the media, Thamil Chelvam said he was pleased to see the two warring sides extend the hand of friendship to each other.

"We must use the teachings of our religious leaders to find answers to this burning problem. Please take this message of peace to our Southern brethren. This war has cost us many young lives of Sinhalese and Tamils. Both sides suffered a lot in the war. The conflict affects mostly the common man," Chelvam said.

"Kilinochchi is a town which had a rich agricultural economy. But the war had destroyed it. The people who fled their home town because of the war have returned and live amidst a lot of hardships."

The LTTE Political leadership appreciated the mandate given by the people to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to bring peace to the nation.

Meanwhile, our Jaffna special correspondent reported that Minister of Social Services and Welfare Ravindra Samaraweera distributed tricycles for the disabled, sewing machines for widows and household utensils to 3,000 who were affected by the war at a mobile service organised by he Social Service Department at the Jaffna Central College.
