Victory for Lankan in London local polls

by Victor Jayanetti, our London correspondent

Councillor Paul Sathianesen Duraisamy was elected for a second term of office with a substantial majority in the London Borough of Newham, and became the number one in the borough, making him the first ever Asian to get the most votes among the 60 Councillors elected.

Paul Sathianesan made history in 1998 when he was the first Sri Lankan elected as councillor in the heart of East London in Newham. Once again he has proved that he is the most popular councillor by far.

Born in Urumpirai, Jaffna, and an old boy of St. John's College, he has lived in East Ham for the past seventeen years. As a consultant on human rights, he has represented many Sri Lankans in UK and Europe on refugee and asylum status. The United Nations Council of Human Rights (UNCHR) chose him as a prominent politician representing minority groups, during their 50th anniversary celebrations, for his achievements in politics.

As the elected Councillor he led the first ever Tourism and Heritage strategy for the Borough and was part of the winning team making the local the "Council of the year" in London. During the recent local elections, leader of the House of Commons, Robin Cook MP, and Minister for Transport, Nick Raynsford MP, visited Paul Sathianesan's polling station to support his campaign.
