Speaker's ruling today on debate of ACTC leader slaying

Speaker Joseph Michael Perera will deliver a ruling today on the objection taken by Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa to a debate on the assassination of ACTC Leader, Kumar Ponnambalam. A motion in this regard had already been presented to the House of TNA Parliamentarian and members of the ACTC K. Vinayagamoorthy. At the party leaders' meeting when the MP pressed for the debate to be taken by expeditiously Opposition Leader, Mahinda Rajapaksa objected to it on the grounds that the matter was sub-judice.

However it was pointed out by Minister of Western Region Development, M. H. Mohamed that he as one time Speaker permitted the debate on the Richard de Zoysa Assassination. This was a "guided debate" where anything deemed subjudice was expunged from the Hanzard. Thus there is precedent for such debate, the former Speaker explained.

TULF MP, R. Sambandan too underlined that the debate should be allowed within the scope of the standing orders.

The Speaker told the Opposition Leader that he (The Speaker) had no document or any material before him pertaining to the case and that a decision would be conveyed today.
