by Puttlam group correspondent The son of a Wayamba Provincial Councillor and an underworld gang leader along with four others were arrested last Friday (31) at Bingiriya, by the Bingiriya Police. The van in which the gang were travelling was also taken into Police custody. The Police who grilled the suspects were able to recover a T-56 gun, a local version of T-56, 63 T-56 cartridges, a twelve-bore gun with eight cartridges and a T-56 magazine buried in a land that belonged to the underworld gang leader at Maha Kumbukkadawala, off Anamaduwa. Three hand grenades were also recovered from Dummalasuriya where the provincial councillor's son is alleged to have been living. The gang leader and the provincial councillor's son were released only recently from remand where they were held on account of several crimes alleged to have been committed by them, the Police revealed. The gang leader in a statement to the Police has admitted that the weapon and cartridges were supplied to him by a Deputy Minister of that previous regime with a contract to kill Puttalam District MP, Ranga Bandara and added that it was the same weapon with which he made an aborted attempt to kill the MP. When contacted MP Ranga Bandara admitted that he was shot at on the election day near Maha Kumbukkadawala paddyfield and if not for the timely arrival of mobile Police and Army units, the conspirators would have succeeded in their mission. Bingiriya Police are conducting further investigations. |
