German and Sri Lankan FMs to meet in Berlin

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tyronne Fernando will meet his German counterpart and Deputy Chancellor Mr. Joschka Fischer in his first visit to Germany as Foreign Minister from June 2-4.

This will be the ministers' last stop in Europe after accompanying Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to London and Brussels.

The two ministers are expected to discuss bilateral issues, investment opportunities and the peace effort initiated by the Government.

Minister Fernando is expected to brief Minister Fischer of the developments in the peace process and prospects for further development in the tourism industry in Sri Lanka .

Sri Lanka's Ambassador in Germany Mr.C.D.Cassie Chetty will host the minister to a reception at the Berlin Intercontinental on Monday.

The Minister will be having meetings with Mr.Erich Stather, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development and Mrs. Brigitte Adler, Chairman of the German-South Asian Parliamentary Friendship Group and nine other Parliamentarians.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag Mr. Hans-Ulrich Klose will also meet the Minister in Berlin.

Germany ranks among the highest in tourist arrivals to the country with over 70,000 arrivals reported before the September 11 attacks.

Germany is Sri Lanka's third largest trading partner and ranks fourth as a source of foreign investment.
