Cyclocross 2002 on April 27

The 'Cyclocross' 2002 races for pedal cyclists and organised and conducted by the National Mountain Biking Association (NMBA) with the assistance of Aitken Spence And Hotel Tea Factory, N. Kandapola Nuwara Eliya will be held on 27th April (Saturday).

Hotel Tea Factory is situated 6800 ft. above sea level in close proximity to the quaint English style village Nuwara Eliya in the misty mountains amidst sprawling verdant tea bushes around the hotel which has 57 rooms including 4 deluxe rooms, is the setting for this event.

Amal Suriyage, President, National Mountain Biking Association briefing the media at a press conference held at the Aitken Spence Head office on Thursday said that in this event there will be 14 events of which the tracks of 1 km for the children and 3.1 km for the seniors which was reduced as earlier mentioned 5.1 km to cover the whole track for the race.

Boys and girls under 10 years and under 13 on 1 km course with concurrent participation with winners being found separately.

The boys and girls under 16 years on 3 km track will take part together and adjudged according to their respective categories. The boys under 19 also will be held on the 3 km track.

There will be the ladies open and fun riders for veterans over 50 years. The team event for members of four, will also be held while the winner of the main event, the Men's sports Challenge race will receive the Hotel Tea Factory Trophy with many more prizes for the other winners and the runners-up.

An exciting event in this Cyclocross is the DownHill event which covers 1.5 km.

The General Manager 'Hotel Tea Factory' Mr. Roshan Fernando said that the Aitken Spence Hotel Management Ltd has made arrangements to make this event a success and they also offer a good weekend package for those who would like to witness the Cyclocross 2002 this year.

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd are the media sponsors of Cyclocross 2002 while the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation will telecast this event live for the firs time.
