Fish dynamiters have a field day

Dynamiting of fish is taking place in South daily and they bring fish in bulk.

There is a very good market for dynamited fish at present, because no fish are available in markets.

Dynamiters are from Kosgoda to Habaraduwa areas in bulk. Board loads of those fish are brought to shores daily at noon and evening and sold openly in markets and sold to individuals at sky high rates.

According to the fishermen of these areas dynamite is used for deep sea fish shoals.

Once they throw the dynamite on to the shoal they immediately cast their pocket net around and when exploded the entire fish shoal is caught in the net.

Now they are using vallams, dinghy boats fitted with out board motors and thirty feet long mechanised boats for the purpose.

There are a large number of officers appointed to prevent this illegal action but they are not seen in these areas, the people say.

There are fishery Inspectors, Fishery Divisional Extension Officers, Fisheries Coastal Conservation Officers, Coastal Guards and several Police through out the coastal belt and action has to be taken to prevent this fish disaster.
