3M Lanka keen to expand business

Enhanced investment in developing infrastructure including telecommunication, roads and power would be a key requirement for Sri Lanka to promote technological innovation in the country, 3M Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., Managing Director Kishore Rao said.

He told the 'Daily News' that, US based 3M company focused on delivering innovation on a global scale is keen to expand its business and will be committed to participate and grow with the local economy.

"During our brief span of nearly seven years operation in Sri Lanka we have been able to introduce numerous products that enhanced productivity and upgraded applications in various facets of industry and commerce in this country. Our core technologies promoted in the country have been in the areas of pharmaceutical, healthcare, signage, telecommunications, office presentation systems, the apparel industry and automotive aftercare.

One of 3Ms key strengths is our ability to upgrade local practices through innovative practices and products. However, our operations in this Sri Lanka are sill confined to technical service, which is only the first stage of various levels of operations. If we are to invest in product modification which is the next level of our operations it is important to have well developed infrastructure in this country. Then we can move on to product development and technology development. Product innovation which is at the top end of the pyramid is possible only in a highly developed country," Mr. Rao said.

Globally 3M's operation is present in 61 countries and it is marketing innovative products in 200 countries. It caters to different segments including industrial sector, transportation, graphics and safety needs, health care, consumer and office requirements, electronic and communications and speciality material for demanding applications in various sectors. 3M Sri Lanka first made a name for itself in the marketing of high quality stationery products, the most popular being the Post-iT notes in bright eye-catching colours and also multi media projectors.

"Today there are several other products used for other industrial and business applications. Most of the offices in Sri Lanka have 3M matting on their doorsteps, or shatter proof film on their windows. The apparel industry uses 3M speciality tapes and adhesives in the manufacturing of high quality garments. There are opportunities to introduce new applications through the launch of new products that make life more convenient for the people in this country. In fact just now we are testing a new liquified painting product for road marking to ensure road safety," Mr. Rao said.

He said 3Ms success has been mainly due to its unique way of doing business.

"We are organised by market not by product. Our aim is to satisfy the customer with superior quality, value and service, respect for the social and physical environment and to provide investors an attractive return through sustained and quality growth.

In Sri Lanka we are working closely with Government institutions. For example we work with the Road Development Authority (RDA) to improve road visibility through the use of special fluorescent markers. Our innovative products have been useful in ensuring road safety. We are also providing useful products and training in the use of specialised equipment for the benefit of the garment industry in the country on which Sri Lanka's economy is depending heavily on," Mr. Rao said.
