Hatton's big match revived after four years

by our Kandy Sports Correspondent

Hot on heels of the peace process by the present government Hatton's 'Big Match' between two leading Sinhala and Tamil Schools between Sri Pada Maha Vidyalaya and Highlands Central College has been revived after a lapse of four years when the 5th Battle of the Hills will be played at Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club's grounds at Darawella today and tomorrow (April 10 and 11) with play commencing at 9.30 a.m. on both days.

This match was last played in 1997 and all the matches played todate has been drawn. It is commendable that though both schools did not field a team during the cricket season just concluded but they took steps to play the Big Match when the peace process in the country is under way. Sri Pada Maha Vidyalaya is a predominantly Sinhala School while Highlands Central College is a Tamil school. But in the past this match has been in perfect harmony and very healthy rivalry prevails.

According to the prime mover of the match P. Karthigeson, the Director Development of BCCSL and former Sri Lanka Captain Duleep Mendis is expected to be the Chief Guests with Nuwara Eliya District CA's Secretary Trevor Nugawela as one of the Guest of Honours. This match is also being organised by the Past Pupils Association of Highlands College which is mixed school.

Highlands Central College will be led by allrounder Divaraj Pradeep who is an attractive left hand bat and the stumper of the side. His deputy will be Ramachandran Pragash who is a medium pacer and a good bat.

Sri Pada MV will be led by Padmal Pumika Perera a fine leg spinner and a left hand bat. Sithum Tharanga is the Vice Captain of the side who is a right hand bat and will be also entrusted with the task of opening the attack.
