Prof. Tillekeratne Kapugamage, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kelaniya in a circular letter to parents of undergraduates of the university has appealed to them to advise their children to maintain close contacts with the students counsellors and insist in maintaining discipline. While the University has only a limited scope of action, parental action could have a more far-reaching effect, the Vice-Chancellor's letter says. The Vice-Chancellor also identifies two student groups that are responsible for the conflict in the University. They are United Students' Front (Ekabadda Shisya Peramuna) and the Foundation for Students' Solidarity (Shisya Sahayogitha Padanama). While one group controls the student hostels, the other group wields power outside the campus premises, says the VC. While the vast majority of students reject violence, they are helpless due to the activities of the groups, he states in his letter. According to the VC, the conflict has escalated to such a degree that the University is unable to take disciplinary action against offenders. Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the Kelaniya University clarifying on the news item appeared under the headline 'Request for Permanent Police Post at University turned down' on our paper on Tuesday states the final decision regarding the request lay with the Inspector General of Police. The main decision arrived at the discussion with the Western Province, North DIG Padmasiri Liyanage was the assurance for adequate police protection round the clock for a minimum of three weeks after re-opening the university.
