by Florence Wickramage In view of the vast development work planned or being currently carried on in the country, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Rukman Senanayake has appointed several committees consisting officials and representatives of non governmental Environment Organisations to work in close contact with the executing institutions of such development programs. The President of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) Dr. Malik Fernando told the Daily News that the Environment Minister has already taken steps to re-appoint the Fauna and Flora Advisory Committee which had been inactive for over two years. Following representations made by the WNPS that Turtle Hatcheries on the Southern coast were being threatened due to development work on the coastline, Minister Senanayake has appointed a committee comprising representatives from the Department of WildLife Conservation (DWLC), NARA, the Coast Conservation Department, the Central Environment Authority (CEA) and the WNPS etc. to make representations, observations and offer advice on how best Turtle Hatcheries could be preserved while making way for development. Dr. Malik Fernando also said that the country has to move forward and therefore the Government has to plan development programs. He said that since the Minister has a personal interest in the Conservation of Natural resources, he has afforded an opportunity for non-governmental Environmental Organisations to be represented in the Committees under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. |
